Ensuring Genocide – The Insurance Industry and Israel’s War Machine

PIPD has endorsed a new campaign for Palestine liberation, climate and migrant justice called Boycott Bloody Insurance. It calls on organisations everywhere to switch away from insurers propping up the climate emergency, detention industry, genocide in Gaza and the colonisation of Palestinian lands.

Insurers play a pivotal role in sustaining the fossil fuel economy and other harmful industries by absorbing corporate risk, allowing companies to profit from destruction with impunity. Boycott Bloody Insurance builds on years of activist pressure to accelerate change within the insurance sector, which has the power to withdraw support from the world’s deadliest industries. From weapons trading to fossil fuel extraction and migrant detention, insurers provide the backbone that allows these exploitative systems to thrive. However, given that these industries account for less than 2% of insurance premiums, insurers are highly vulnerable to activist pressure, as they have little financial incentive to continue underwriting this harm.

Past insurance campaigns have already secured significant wins, forcing insurers to drop coverage for projects like the TMX pipeline, the East African Crude Oil Pipeline, and Adani’s Carmichael coal mine. More recently, activists have pressured AXA to cut ties to genocide and settler colonialism in Palestine. Boycott Bloody Insurance now seeks to escalate these efforts by uniting movements for climate justice, Palestinian liberation, and migrant rights. This growing alliance of organisations is pushing for a fundamental shift in the industry’s practices, demanding that companies and institutions sever ties with the worst insurers. Through coordinated boycotts and sustained actions, activists aim to strip the insurance sector of its role in enabling global harm.
