6. Cookies and how we use them

A cookie is a small text file passed to your computer, mobile phone or other device, through your web browser, so the website remembers who you are when you return.

Our site uses plugins and cookies that may automatically record information. Their use aims to make the use of the site more pleasant by improving its ergonomics from the data collected.

This data can also be used in particular for statistical measurement purposes, analysis of internet user behaviours and anonymised geolocation in order to personalise our offer and message to our users.

When you browse our site, the computer you use will interact with a server that provides all the requested resources by automatically saving each operation to a specific file in which the computer used is identified by its IP address. This is how the browser that you use gives us some standard data, including the browser used and its features, the operating system of the computer, tablet or smartphone used. Cookies may also be used by some parts of the site where we utilise third-party services – such as YouTube, Facebook, Google+ and Twitter – from which you have logged into our website. These cookies are managed by these external sites, and no personal data is shared between the PIPD and its partners.

This data and in particular the IP address of the computer, tablet or smartphone used do not allow us to identify you by name.

The PIPD uses Google Analytics to track how its website is used. Google Analytics uses cookies to help gather statistics on how people use websites. For example, which country the user is from, and which pages are visited while on the website. We use this information to look at how our website is being used so we can assess how well it is working and make decisions about how to improve it.

If you do not wish to have cookies stored on your computer, you can easily change your web browser to refuse them, or to alert you when you get a new cookie. You need to refer to your internet browser’s instructions by clicking on the ‘Help’ menu. Refusing cookies, however, can restrict your use of websites.
